to understand the purpose and goals of first you first have to understand the goals of engineering and then first makes perfect sense. simply stated, engineering is a process for creative problem solving. over 25 years ago dean kamen, among others, realized that the united states was not developing sufficient graduates from stem (science technology engineering and math) related fields to be competitive in the technical job market. using his engineering skills dean looked at the situation as a problem and applied creative thinking to propose a solution. dean asked, “what do students like to do?” and identified arena sports and rock concerts as popular entertainment. dean took these two venues and added a technical challenge to inspire young students to choose to play in the domain of stem. take a look at the following two videos from the 21st kickoff to hear dean kamen, founder, talk about “what is first ? ” and dr. woodie flowers, chief engineer, talk about “ why first ? “. if you want to see a couple snapshots of what first is all about, take a look at these videos. first is a “varsity sport for the mind!” first is engineering in practice. first is “for inspiration and recognition of science and technology.” for more information on first robotics take a look at firstinspires.org . 2017-18 ftc season first relic recovery game & season materials game manual part 1 game manual part 2 one page game summary field assembly guide field setup guide photo by: john hendler our state superintendent, michael flanagan, visited the red hot chili bots’ headquarters on february 18. a representative group of our team walked mr. flanagan through our program and demonstrated the essay editor tools we have been using to create our robot for this year. we also talked about the positive impact it has had on each of us. this year our team has accelerated in the use of computer automated design (cad) to design and validate many parts of our robot prior to building. it was fun to have the opportunity to talk with mr. flanagan about our successes. team game history 2013 2014 2015 ultimate ascent was our rookie year challenge. there were three parts to the game; the thirty second autonomous mode, the two minute teleoperated mode, and the last thirty seconds of teleop which is the the end game. the goal of autonomous was to have the robot score frisbees into the goals, either the high goal, middle goal, or the low goal. when the bell sounds at the beginning of teleop our drive team takes control of the robot and we can either play with an offensive strategy, trying to score frisbees or we can play defensive trying to prevent the other team from scoring. the last thirty seconds of teleop is the end game where robots try to climb at least one of three levels on a pyramid that is on the field. aerial assist was our second year competition. this game consisted of two parts; a thirty second autonomous mode and a two minute teleoperated mode. to start a match, robots are placed behind a line with the option of holding an exercise ball. at the start of autonomous robots can drive forward for points and score the ball into one of two goals, a high goal and a low goal. when teleop mode starts drivers step forward and take control of their robot. there can only be one ball per alliance on the field at a time, so to get the most points per ball teams want to pass the ball to each other across the field, throwing it over a five foot truss, and catching the ball before scoring it into a goal. this game consists of two game modes; a thirty second autonomous mode and a two minute teleoperated mode. the unique principle of this game is that there is no defense. the two alliances are kept separate from each other and even have a chance to work together to earn more points. the teams can start in one of two zones on the field at the beginning of autonomous mode with the goal of moving into the auto zone to earn the minimum amount of points. teams also have the option to move a yellow tote and/or a can into the auto zone for even more points. when the teleoperated mode starts teams are encouraged to collect totes and stack them on scoring platforms for points. totes can be stacked no higher than six high along with a tote placed on top that can also have a piece of litter placed into it for the maximum amount of points per stack. during the game the human player can throw litter into the opposing alliance’s field to try to score some extra points but if the other alliance moves the litter into another zone though, they get the points. what we do first robotics’ purpose is to inspire students to consider stem as part of their academic and career paths. the red hot chili bots students and mentors focus on providing opportunities for students to expand their working knowledge of engineering procedures, while engaging in the business of building a robot. the first experience continually impacts the goals of our students. check out our testimonials page under the team for details in their own words. how to join you can drop by one of our meetings or send an email to mr. seifert or mrs. robinson for more information about our team. we meet in room 133 at the marshall high school, on tuesday from 2:45 to 4:45 and on thursday from 6 pm to 8 pm. students can talk to any of our team members to learn more about the robotics team. parents, mentors, sponsors – please stop by any time to learn more about the program and how you can help. how to support the robotics program is funded by team fund raising efforts, local corporations, and grants. please visit our donate page to learn more about how you can help the team. inspiring students join the robotics team as a student ?
